| SITE #1 BEAVERDAM - NORTH Boundaries: Bounded to the north by count circle, the east by Lawrence Road, to the south a line ½ mile below rock springs and Old Beaverdam Road, west to Old Weaver road, line ½ mile below Old Weaver from bridge to Highway 50, Highway 50 to north edge of circle. Driving opportunities: Old Weaver Road - bridge, causeway, farm fields and power line cut. Old Beaverdam Road - fields. Rock Springs Road - fields and residences. Beaverdam Road - fields and power lines. Walking opportunities: Old Weaver Road, west of causeway - fishermen’s paths on north side of road, old road bed on south side, power line to the west. Junction of Old Weaver and Old Beaverdam roads - old road bed from parking area, fields on both sides of Old Beaverdam, shore to the north, marshy sections south of Old Weaver and east of Old Beaverdam road. Horshoe Road - Beaverdam Creek bridge and downstream. Best bet: Drive causeway and bird lake for ducks and raptors. Check length of Old Weaver for Kestrels and first mile of Old Beaverdam in morning, afternoon and evening. Walk Old roadbed and marshy areas by junction of Old Weaver and Old Beaverdam roads. Follow shoreline north and bird fields. Bird west side of causeway shorelines and powerline. Specialty birds: Power lines - Kestrel. Lake - Gadwall, Wigeon, Harrier, Bald Eagle, Black Duck. Marshes - Snipe, Swamp Sparrow, Woodcock Fields - Eastern Meadowlark, Field Sparrows, Loggerhead Shrike Facilities: None Directions from park office: Drive north on Highway 50 to intersection with Old Weaver Road, turn right into area. Site History: Every year. SITE #2 MT OLIVE CHURCH Boundaries: Bounded to the north by Old Weaver road, west south and east bounded by Falls Lake. Lake sightings included. Old Weaver road is just outside circle through its length. Cheek road bridge is also out, but viewing from there to the circle is possible. Driving opportunities: Boyce road - farm fields, residences and power line. Olive Grove Church rd - scrub fields, residences and power line. Old Weaver road - scrub fields, residences. Ledge rock boat ramp - view of lake and wooded cove. Walking opportunities: Game lands at dead end of Olive Grove Church Road - many roads, fields, power line, and shoreline. Ledge Rock boat ramp - fisherman’s trails at dead end road, shoreline by boat ramp. Game lands near Old Weaver’s junction with Cheek road - pond, pier area (boundary). Best bet: Check for owls at game lands on Olive Grove Church Road before sunup. Check lake and wooded cove from boat ramp as sun rises. Return to game lands spending most of the morning there. Check fields, farm fields and power lines in afternoon. Bird by Cheek Road, and from it. Bird dead end of road by boat ramp. Specialty birds: Fields - Savannah Sparrow, Northern Bobwhite. Forests - Red headed woodpecker Eastern Screech Owl, Great Horned Owl. Lake - Gadwall, Pintail, Wigeon, Canvasback, Scoter, Bald Eagle. Facilities: None. Directions from park office: Drive north on Highway 50 about 2 miles, turn left on Old Weaver road, 2 miles intersect with Boyce road, turn left. Site History: Every year. Site #3 SANDLING BEACH Maps of Sandling Beach, Beaverdam, Highway 50 Boundaries: To the north by a line ½ mile below Old Weaver road, to the east by the lake shore all the way to the Highway 50 bridge. Back up Highway 50, east side only, then west from a point ½ mile south of the park entrance at a gated road bed, to the lake shore. Driving opportunities: Sandling Beach Rec. Area - park roads, fields, beach. Beaverdam Rec. Area - park roads, fields, beach. Highway 50 Boat Ramps - park roads, boat ramp area. Highway 50 - bridge, sandy plains pond. Walking opportunities: Sandling Beach - continuous shoreline trail, nature trail, wastewater area, fields. Beaverdam - fields, picnic trails, fishing piers. Highway 50 boat ramps - boat ramp, spillway. Best bet: With scope bird Highway 50 bridge, boat ramp area and the spillway north into Beaverdam Lake. Head to Sandling Beach, bird the lake from beach area, shelter 1 and shelter 7. Head to Beaverdam Rec. Area bird from beach and fishing piers. Walk Sandling Beach wastewater areas, field by shelter 7 and adjacent roadbed. Walk nature trail, beaverdam field past entrance station and check pond by Sandy Plains BP station. In evening scan gull flock from Sandling Beach beach area, or wherever visible from shore. Specialty birds: Roads/forests - Palm Warbler, Blue-headed Vireo. Lake - Common Loon, Mergansers, Horned Grebe, All duck species, Greater and Lesser Black-backed Gull. Facilities: Restrooms and picnic sites located in Sandling, Beavedam and Highway 50. Directions from park office: Travel north on Highway 50, entrance to the boat ramps ½ mile on the right. 1.5 miles further Sandling entrance on left and Beaverdam entrance on right. Site History: Every year. Site #4 WOODLIEF ROAD Boundaries: To the north by a line ½ mile north of New Light and Bruce Garner roads, the east by Lawrence road and Mangum Dairy roads, to the south by Purnell road, then from Purnell road bridge to New Light by a line approximately 1 mile south of Purnell road, roughly parallel to it. North end of Holly Point State property not included. Driving opportunities: New Light Road - fields. Woodlief Road - fields, new developments, bridge, farm fields, residences. Purnell Road - fields, residences, farm fields, bridge. Mangum Dairy Road - bridge, river bottom. Walking opportunities: Purnell Road gamelands - entrances on south side of Purnell road, ½ mile east of New Light and near Old Still side road. Roughly 6-8 miles of logging and forest roads. Purnell Road bridge - fishing paths on all sides of bridge. Woodlief Road bridge - fishing paths below bridge, 200' west of bridge a trail leads from Woodlief road south to the creek. Mangum Dairy - from the creek downstream to the lake. Best bet: Check Purnell Road bridge, then Woodlief bridge. Follow trail west of Woodlief bridge to creek to look for ducks. Bird farm fields and residences from Woodlief road bridge to Purnell road. Bird to and around Purnell bridge. Bird gamelands section off Purnell road. Drive up New Light road stopping to bird fields. At end of New Light, double back and turn down Woodlief road. Bird from the road to Purnell. Continue east on Purnell to Mangum Dairy, bird the river bottom. Specialty birds: Residences - Woodlief road across from farm field just north of Purnell - Pine Siskin. House Finches. Farm fields - Chipping Sparrows, Kestrel. Forests - Fox Sparrows. Site History: partial only. Site #4A GRAN - FRANK Boundaries: To the north by count circle, to the east by US 1, south by Purnell Road, to the west by Mangum Dairy to Lawrence Road. Driving opportunities: Many - farm fields, forests. New Subdivisions, shore ponds Walking opportunities: Best bet: Specialty birds: Fields – Shrike, Kestrel, Sparrows. Facilities: None. Directions from park office: Drive south on Highway 50 to Highway 98. Take Highway 98 east for about 4 miles, turn left onto Stony Hill Road which ends at Purnell Road. Site History: partial 101 and on. Site #5 NEW LIGHT BIKE TRAILS MAP Boundaries: Bounded to the north by a line ½ mile below Old Beaverdam Road and ½ mile west of New Light Road, to the east New Light Road, state park boundary to the lakeshore. South along Falls Lake to Mangum area, western border where Old Weaver hits Falls Lake again. Driving opportunities: Old Weaver Road - ponds & lake. New Light Road - forest. Walking opportunities: Mangum area - all fisherman’s paths along shoreline. Gated road to small cove. Old Weaver - all roadside pull offs for fisherman’s paths. Bike trail parking area - 20+ miles of trails available for hiking or biking. Best bet: Bird Mangum area off Old Weaver, (fishing access with small bridge). Bird lake and ponds on both sides of Old Weaver Road. Hike in from gated access to cove. Bird bike trails. Bird New Light bridge area and access off New Light time permitting. Specialty birds: Forests - Fox Sparrows, Owls. Lakes/Ponds - Swamp Sparrow, Herons, ducks. Facilities: None. Nearest in Holly Point Campground. Directions from park office: Drive north on Highway 50 to intersection with Old Weaver Road, turn right and follow across bridge to area. Site History: partial every year. Site #6 WOODPECKER RIDGE Boundaries: To the north by a line ½ mile below the Sandling Beach entrance, from the lake to Highway 50. To the east by Highway 50, then south and west by Falls Lake. Driving opportunities: Highway 50 - forests. Walking opportunities: Woodpecker Ridge - park at gated accesses or sign to access the many fire roads. Best bet: Owl along highway 50 in morning. Park at first gated access heading north on 50. Hike all roads birding fields and ponds. Bird in from second and third gated accesses. Specialty birds: Roads - Barred Owl. Forests - Bowhite, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Red headed and Pileated Woodpecker, Fox Sparrow. Fields - Common Yellowthroat, Blue-headed Vireo. Lake - Red-breasted Merganser, Osprey, Bald Eagle. Facilities: None. Closest at Highway 50 Boat Ramps. Directions from park office: Drive north on Highway 50, after crossing bridge Woodpecker Ridge is on your left. Site History: Every year. Site #7 HOLLY POINT MAP Boundaries: All state park boundaries. To the north by a line leaving New Light Road at the Baptist Church. Line runs roughly east to the lake, to the east along the lake to New Light Road bridge. Across bridge following shore to boundary line leaving second cove, north to gravel road at Well 29. Driving opportunities: Holly Point Campground - Open camping loops, boat ramp. New Light Road - bridge. Walking opportunities: Holly Point Campground - All roads and camping loops, connecter hiking trail and boat ramp. All park boundaries available for hiking. Holly Point Water Treatment Plant - paved and gravel roads, mulch field, treatment ponds and spray fields. New Light Road - all pull-offs for hunter trails, power line. Gated gravel road and power line. Parking 1/8 mile north of cemetery, field access. Best bet: Check New Light Bridge quick for raptors and waterfowl. Bird Holly Point boat ramp and drive open loops looking for Turkey. Bird Water Treatment pond, spray fields and mulch field. Return to Holly Point, bird closed loops and trail. Re-check boat ramp and open roads. Bird Gated gravel road ½ mile north of bridge and bird around New Light bridge. Specialty birds: Campground -Wild Turkey. | SITE #8 ROLLINGVIEW MAP Boundaries: To the west by count circle, the north and east along the lakeshore, south along lick creek to Highway 98, back to circles edge. Driving opportunities: Baptist Road - Recreation area, fields, ponds. Southview Road - fields, ponds, forests. Walking opportunities: Rollingview Recreation Area - all camp loops, beach areas, hiking trail, boundaries, fields, water fishing pier, treatment ponds and duck pond near entrance. Rolling view Marina - marina, boat ramp, shoreline. Shaw Road - last 1/4 mile only, tip of point. Best bet: Bird boat ramp and point area of Recreation Area. Bird swim beach area and fields. Bird Duck Pond and fishing pier. Bird marina, Shaw Road and Southview Road. Bird rest of recreation area camp loops and trails. Site #8A LICK CREEK Boundaries: To the west by the count circle, then Highway 98, then up Lick Creek, then lake shore to a longitudinal line to curve in Old Creedmoor Road, south on Old Creedmoor to county line, back to edge of count circle. Includes illegal bike trails off Old Creedmoor. Driving opportunities: Highway 98 - ponds, bridge. Coley Road - power lines, fields. Walking opportunities: Lick Creek bridge at 98 - fishing paths, waterfowl impoundments south of 98. Old Creedmoor - bike trails through forests, boundaries. Coley Road - power lines. Best bet: Bird waterfowl impoundments and along lick creek. Bird bike trails and road power lines. Specialty birds: American Pipit, Common Yellowthroat Facilities: None. Does not include illegal bike trails off Old Creedmoor, but does include powerline off Highway 50. Driving opportunities: Highway 50 - bridge, fields. Old Creedmoor - fields. Walking opportunities: Park office - dock, field, maintenance area, gamelands. Falls Lake trail - from Highway 50 to Ghoston Road. Highway 50 bridge - fishermen’s paths, power line. Best bet: Check Highway 50 bridge, office dock and maintenance dock. Bird gamelands area behind maintenance. Bird power line to lake and Falls Lake trail. Specialty birds: Wild Turkey. Walking opportunities: Shinleaf Recreation Area - All open and closed camping areas. Falls Lake Trail - Ghoston Road to 98. New Light Road - fishermen’s paths east of New Light bridge. 98 - fishing paths north of bridge. Best bet: Check fishing paths off New Light Road east of New Light bridge. Bird Shinleaf out to peninsula, bird closed section of campground and Falls Lake trail. Specialty birds: Forests - Turkey, Barred Owl. Facilities: Restrooms available at Recreation Area. Directions from park office: Drive south on Highway 50 to Highway 98. Travel east 1 ½ mile to stoplight. Turn left onto New Light road following signs to Shinleaf. Site History: Every year. Site #11 B.W. WELLS MAP Boundaries: Bounded to the north by Purnell Road, from the bridge to Stony Hill Road, to the east by Stony Hill Road, south by Highway 98, west by the lakeshore. Driving opportunities: Stony Hill Road - fields, power line. Walking opportunities: B.W. Wells Recreation Area - all paved and gravel roads, hiking trails, boundary lines and surrounding gamelands. Bud Morris Road - Gamelands at dead end, fishing path. Stony Hill Road - power line. Best bet: Bird power line out to historic area and bird fields and trails including ziegle’s rock. Bird campground area along fields, boat ramp, campsites and hiking trails. Bird dead end of Bud Morris Road, power line off Stony Hill Road, and any side roads. Site #14 PLEASANT UNION Boundaries: To the north by Highway 98, then a line west of Upper and Lower Bartons Creek back waters to Norwood Road. Then to Six Forks south to count circle, following county line north to Old Creedmoor Road and back to 98. Driving opportunities: Many. Walking opportunities: Pleasant Union Elementary School. Site History: 100 and on. Site #15 BLUE JAY POINT MAP Boundaries: To the north by Highway 98, from the 98 bridge along a line heading south west to Lower Bartons Creek bridge. Then Six Forks Road to Norwood Road. The western boundary is a line west of the back waters of Upper and Lower Bartons Creek. Driving opportunities: Six Forks Road - bridges, ponds. Blue Jay Point County Park - park roads, fields. Walking opportunities: Blue Jay Point County Park - hiking trails and fields. Upper Bartons Creek boat ramp - fishing paths, power lines and Falls Lake trail. Fishing Area - fishing paths. All bridges - fishing paths. Best bet: Check Upper and Lower Barton Creek bridges for waterfowl. Bird Blue Jay Point visitor center for Eastern Screech Owl, bird fields and hiking trails. Bird Blue Jay Point trail out to point. Site #16 OLD KEITH ROAD Boundaries: From the 98 bridge, follow 98 east, then Stony Hill Road, Frank Bailey road to a line ½ mile behind pool of 98 bridge, then east on 98 again to Horse Creek. To the south follow Horse Creek to the lakeshore, back to 98 bridge. Driving opportunities: Highway 98 - bridges. Old Keith Road - fields. Keith Road - fields, residences. Walking opportunities: Old Keith Road - fishing paths into gamelands at dead end of road by cemetery. Highway 98 Bridge - fishing paths from fishing access area. Highway 98 - second bridge east, all paths leading into gamelands. Best bet: Check both bridges first, then bird Old Keith Road area, bird by second bridge then the first. Specialty birds: Area - American Robin evening roost, assumed Fox Sparrows. Northern Harrier Facilities: None. Directions from park office: Drive south on Highway 50 to Highway 98. Take 98 east 3 miles to bridge and into area. Site History: 101 and on. Site #17 OLD NC 98 Boundaries: To the north by Highway 98 to US 1, then to the south by a latitudinal line about 1 mile north of dam to US 1. The west is bounded by the lake shore. Driving opportunities: Old NC 98 - fields, developements. Walking opportunities: Old NC 98 - at dead end, old road beds and trails into gamelands and boundaries in either direction. Best bet: Bird gamelands at dead end of NC 98. Specialty birds: Gamelands – Sparrows, blackbirds, Northern Harrier Facilities: Area stores. Directions from park office: Drive south on Highway 50 to Highway 98. Take 98 east seven miles to stoplight, turn right onto Thompson Mill Road, turn right on Old NC 98. Site History: 102 and on. Site #18 YORKSHIRE Boundaries: To the north leaving Six Forks bridge following the lake shore to bridge at Raven Ridge Road. South from the bridge by a longitudinal line meeting up with Litchford Road. Bounded to the south by count circle, to Six Forks Road along the west, back to the bridge. Driving opportunities: Many - developments and subdivisions. Walking opportunities: Yorkshire - building area, lake, state park boundaries, Carlyle developments. Falls Lake Trail - from Six Forks bridge to Raven Ridge bridge, spurs. Possum Track and Raven Ridge bridge - fishing paths. Possum Track - game land accesses at gate and at dead end intersection with Falls Lake trail. Gated gravel road to Raleigh water treatment area. Best bet: Bird Yorkshire building area and lake. Bird Possum Track and Six Forks bridges. Bird area at dead end of Possum Track. Bird gamelands, Falls Lake trail and Yorkshire boundaries. Specialty birds: Eastern Meadowlard in new subdivisions. Facilities: None. Directions from park office: Drive south on Highway 50 to Highway 98. Take 98 east 1 ½ miles to stoplight. Turn right onto Six Forks Road to stop sign. Turn left on Possum Track and into area. Site History: partial only. Site #19 FALLS DAM MAP Boundaries: To the north by a latitudinal line 1 mile north of dam from lake shore to US 1. To the east by US 1, the south by a latitudinal line connecting to Dunn Road, then past Falls of the Neuse Road to Raven Ridge. From Raven Ridge bridge along the lake shore for western boundary. Driving opportunities: Dam area - tailrace fishing area, canoe launch, dam. Walking opportunities: Dam area - spillway, fishing paths and path to rock overhang, tailrace area and area directly below the dam, overflow cut, fields along main road, visitor center. Falls Lake Trail - From the dam to Raven Ridge Road. Canoe Launch - gravel road and fishing paths. Dunn Road - remnants of biking trails. Best bet: Bird top of spillway, rock overhang, overflow channel down below the dam. Bird Marshy pools below the dam then cross the bridge to fishing area and back up to spillway. Bird fields and visitor center, Falls Lake trail, canoe launch and other fishing paths. Specialty birds: Dam - Greater Black-backed Gull, Pine Siskin, Swamp Sparrow below dam. Fields - Savannah Sparrow, Chipping Sparrow. Facilities: Dam office. Directions from park office: Drive south on Highway 50 to Highway 98. Take 98 east seven miles to stoplight, turn right onto Thompson Mill Road, turn right on Old NC 98, then left onto Falls of the Neuse Road. Site History: Partial every year. Sites #20 LANDFILL Boundaries: To the north by a latitudinal line connecting Raven Ridge, Dunn Road and US1, to the east by US 1, south by Durant Road and around Water Treatment Facility back to Raven Ridge. Site #21 DURANT NATURE PARK MAP Boundaries: Durant Road to the north, count circle edge to the south and Litchford Road to the west. Driving opportunities: None. Walking opportunities: Durant Nature Park - hiking trails, adjacent greenway. Industrial area ponds Best bet: Bird ponds at nature center via hiking trails, bird trail by creek and green way, find industrial ponds along nearby train tracks. Specialty birds: Durant Nature Park - Great Horned Owl, Red-breasted Nuthatch, Fish Crow Facilities: None. Directions from park office: Drive south on Highway 50 to Highway 98. Take 98 east seven miles to stoplight, turn right onto Thompson Mill Road, turn right on Old NC 98, then left onto Falls of the Neuse Road.
